Not Worth Dying For

Not worth dying for.

There are a few things in this world that most people would consider dying for. Their children, families and patriotism are the top three. What is not worth dying for is money or other property.

While according to the National Association of Convenience Stores 80% of the convenience store in America go crime free in any given year and that there has been a 16 % decrease of convenience store crimes in the past 12 years, it is still very common for robbers to target convenience stores. Often times convenience store clerks are alone early in the morning and late at night this makes the easy targets.

Not worth fighting for

To many times I have seen these incredible dangerous videos on public T.V and the Internet. You have all seen them, the ones where some lunatic sticks a gun in a store clerks face or some other Kind of weapon and amazingly the clerk fights back. T.V shows like “Cops” “Real Police Video” Caught on Tape” and many other reality shows air these things often heralding the clerk as some kind of hero.

The reality is that they are just plain reckless and stupid.

Risking their lives and putting other people in danger does not make a hero. There is a reason store clerks everywhere are taught not to fight back. It is because the money is insured!

You can Die

Convenience store clerks being seriously injured or killed during robberies really does happen. No one is invincible. In most cases clerks that are injured or killed attempted to not cooperate with the assailant.

For what? a little bit of money in the till, It just is not worth it. There isn't enough money in the world to replace the loss of someones parent, grandparent, brother or sister.

My experience

During the many years that I worked as a c-store manager I have been robbed at gunpoint several times. Some times were much worse that others but every time was scary as hell.

One time a robber entered my store literally seconds after I had unlocked the door. Because I had not had the time to walk back around the counter it was easy for him to grab me from behind and push his gun into my side. being caught unaware it was most definitely the worst experience of my life. I could feel his breath on the back of my neck as he shoved me in front of him. I begged for my life, and I am not ashamed to admit that. I complied with his demands and did exactly as I was told. As he was leaving my store he shot and killed a customer who was entering the store.

There was no reason for him to shoot this man he just did it. At his trial when asked why he said I just felt like it. When he was asked why he had not shot me he replied that it was because I had cooperated.

How to help

Fighting back does not help. If you want to help yourself in this situation, and this applies to everyone not just store clerks, be a good witness. Pay attention to details. Things like what s/he is wearing, how they talked, did they have facial hair, what direction did they go when they left, did they leave on foot or in a car, scars and tattoos, anything that you can remember will help police to find them.

Go to court and testify. It may be frightening and hard to have to re-live the experience but it is something that you need to do. It will help you make peace with what has happened.

If you have been

If you have been the victim of a violent crime it is important to remember that not everyone handles things the same way. Being a victim can leave you with some very real issues. Issues that should be addressed by professionals.

It may not be the case for everyone but if you are having trouble such as nightmares, fear of returning to work, fear of being alone etc. it is best to seek help to be able to put it behind you.

Contact your physician or local hospital to find help resources in your area.

What an interesting perspective!!! I really think this is amazing...and you know what, I so agree. Money is not worth half the energy we put into it much less dying for it!

Excellent hub, Ohma!

Ann Many times people react without thinking it is hard not to do. but if people understand that there is no shame in not fighting back it may change the way they think they should respond.

Wow, this hub sure brought back some scary memories.

About 6 years ago at about 1 in the morning an armed thug held a knife to my wifes neck as he robbed her store.

I remember watching the video afterwards and I just freaked knowing I almost lost the lady I love. I also remember using the exact same words you used. I told her its not worth dying for.

Anyways Ohma your hub is now up on my blog and I hope it gets tons of traffic.

Thank-you Dale

it is funny when I read your post It sounded just like talking to my Husband. He was never happy about me being alone in the store, and used to sit and listen to the police scanner all the time praying not to hear my stores address come across. I guess it was probably even harder on him than me because I was there and knew what was going on.

Very scary story. Being smart saved your life.

I had a gun pulled on me on two different occasions when I used to live in Houston. Anyone who says they wasn't scared is either full of it or mental. I put one in prison and the other one got away with my empty wallet. This is why I moved away from Houston.

OMG, I cant imagine being robbed at gun point. You are right-certain things are not worth fighting or dieing for-one of which is money. Great Job on this Hub!

Thank-You H.C. I think the thing that is the most dangerous is that the media makes these clerks that risk their lives so needlessly out to be Heros. It sends a very dangerous message.

Whoa... that's gotta be pretty dramatic to go through several robberies at the same conveinence store that's obiviously a target for robbers.

That just reminds of an incident early one Saturday morning around 8:45 am in January '09. I walked into a neighborhood liquor store to buy a White-Owl. A lady came in with me and just went straight to the back. I really didn't pay attention to her, but I did notice that the cash register draws were laying flat on the counter (emptied) and the clerk was counting the money. Not paying attention to the man standing several feet away from me, I asked for a white-owl, the clerk (a man by the way) kept counting the money. The owner (both Pakistanian) was standing behind the counter as well several feet away from his clerk and standing in front of the customer that was beside me (just on the opposite side of the counter). I happened to turn around and the man (who looked like a crackhead, around 5 '8", 5 '9") was holding a gun and threatened to shoot me if I didn't step away. He looked a lil' intimidated by my height (6 '3"), but anyway I went to the back of the store with the lady that walked in with me (a middle-aged woman) and a younger woman around in her mid 20's who broke down when the robber left about 30 seconds later, with the clerk hopping over the counter going after the guy while the owner called the police. The older woman consoled the younger one, and in the heat of everything that happened I just went to another store.

I figured the robber knew the store had just opened and knew that it would be empty around this time, no one was hanging around outside yet that could identify him. He probably didn't get too much more than the bank they started off with at the beginning of the day and maybe a few dollars extra, but he was a fiend so I'm sure he had a field day with whatever little money he was able to get his desperate, greedy little hands on. I don't know if he was ever apprehended or not, but with that being said I support your opinion that it's not worth being a hero for a few bucks, because as life goes on, you'll get over it. I was truly blessed too that he didn't try to rob me too.

With that being said, I just want to acknowledge that you've gave good advice in this hub and to stay strong!

Yep the worst part is that I went back to work in another c-store after losing this job. Glutton for punishment I guess.

OMG! I couldn't imagine being held at gunpoint once but 3 times! You must be such a brave and strong person! I never want to work in a store again now lol, great advice though, I totally agree, fighting back would just be stupid and the worst thing to do, well done for co-operating and being brave Ohma! Great hub, I'm rating up :) Smiles and hugs :)
