Common Sense in Government

A Viscous Circle

I made a comment in the forums today in which I identified myself as “A Lower Class American”. Six months ago, before I was unreasonably terminated from my job, I was “A Working Lower Class American”.

The only differences I can see between these two titles is that six months ago I was collecting a mediocre paycheck for doing an honest days work and now I am not. Now instead of barely able to keep up with the over inflated cost of living in the United States

I am not able to keep up at all.

Would I rather be working? Absolutely!

The trouble is there are so many problems with the value system in America that the average working class in America is being left out in the cold!

Outsourcing America

CNN new compiled a list of companies, who in there words are "Exporting America." This is a list of U.S. companies, which CNN has verified are either sending American jobs overseas, or choosing to employ cheap overseas labor, instead of American workers. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/popups/exporting.america/content.html

Out sourcing creates jobs in America. Yes it absolutely does, but it does not create jobs for middle and lower class Americans. These jobs are being taken from us at an alarming rate. The practice of outsourcing is not new. It has been going on for years but it is only just recently that major companies have started shipping all of their general labor and production jobs overseas. Hershey, Pfaltzgraff, and Tyco Electronics, are a few major players in my area who made CNN’s list of notables.

It seems to me that if this problem is allowed to continue unchecked the “Executives” managing the outsourcing projects will be the only ones working and unless I have been seriously mislead for many years, Americans need American Dollars to buy American Products.

Another thing I found very interesting while doing a brief Internet search of outsourcing is that when you type in ‘outsourcing American jobs” into the “Bing” search engine it returns 2,870,000 results of which the top 20 are all sites that have found outsourcing to be a bad idea. The top 20 of “Google’s” 962,000 results are much the same as “Bings.”

I do understand that while we little people are concerned about staying afloat, these companies need to find away to stay competitive in the world market and for that reason the big companies feel justified in outsourcing to lower waged workers.

So major companies are responding to the American workers whose demands for ever increasing wages are forcing them to seek less expensive alternatives. While American workers are responding to the ever-increasing cost of living being driven up-words by American companies desire to produce greater profits.

Where will it end ?

I do not claim to be anything other than a reasonably intelligent hard working American but it seems simple to me

Stop the outsourcing – our government is always so interested controlling and mandating, why don’t they put that talent to work where it might help.  If major companies are penalized for outsourcing unless and until the American unemployment rate is less than 1% the problem would end in a hurry.

Buy American – American workers who have earned American dollars working in American companies should spend their money buying American products. The unfortunate part of this is that right now there are very few products that can boast that they are 100% American made. There are some natural resources that are just not available in our country but import should be limited to un-processed raw materials.

This would create more jobs for Americans

Price Control - Controlling the cost of products on the basis of cost to produce would prevent companies from increasing their cost to American workers. In turn preventing American workers from demanding higher wages and eliminating the need for American companies to seek alternatives like outsourcing.

Will This Solve the Problem?

I do not know but it seems to me that our Government has tried applying everything but logic and common sense to this problem without success so what could it hurt to try

I agree with you on so many points, and were you to visit my pages you would see proof. Unfortunately, common sense is a very rare commodity in this world, and our leaders mistrust it, preferring instead some rarified system where the poor pay the rich to keep on (place whichever verb best seems to fit) them.

Nice to meet you. And I will read more of your work. Very interesting.

Thank your for this wonderful compliment. It is fulfilling to know my article touched someone. Did you receive the email I sent? I find often emails through hubpages contacts are spammed.

Good Hub, adding you to my fan list.

Too bad we can't outsource our living expenses. :-)

Instead of price controls, I suggest two additions to your list. But they ain't gonna happen:

1) Illegal immigrants (mostly, dare I say, Mexicans) take entry jobs from U.S. citizens. This keeps wages down all across the board. So, SHIP THEM ALL BACK. This was done in the 1950s.

Yes, that was before political correctness and the la raza and reconquista movements. Good luck today.

2) This country was built on NO INCOME TAX, but PROTECTIVE TARIFFS, which encouraged companies to make stuff here and provide jobs here. That would do it again.

But fuggedaboud that -- both conservatives and libertarians will chant "free trade", and the INTERNATIONAL companies, and their lackeys and subsidiaries, the major media, will lead the charge against that bogeyman, citing (I think) Smoot-Hawley and trade wars. Wrong analysis, but not room here to refute it.

Common sense? Redundacy and convaluted policies ensure large donations from corporations to get re-elected. Greed from Corps even keep them from realizing that if they make a better product, we'd pay more. They're taking the ploy of the Chinese of make it quick and cheap, and you'll just have to buy more, since it won't last. I'll let you join our group. It's actually called the common sense party. Not enough of that being used anymore. Great ideas. We'll nominate you as leader.
